This wax relief sculpture is cast in 100% pure beeswax in a mold taken from one of my original sculptures. The sculpture was modeled after a marginalia figure (pictured). It was hand carved, painted with oils, and given a gold leaf treatment. The mat is hand cut from a thin sheet of red wax. The 7x9 solid wood frame features gold leafed accents.
 
There has been much scholarly debate about the significance of the depictions of snail combat in medieval marginalia. Images of armed knights fighting snails are common. Read more about the theories here through the British Library
